EARLY LIFE:
Evaline Cameron was an Ojibwe woman from the Wabaseemoong Independent Nations, in northern Ontario. When she was young, her family suffered a great tragedy when her father died, leaving Evaline’s mother in charge of raising the children. Despite the struggles she faced early in life, Evaline excelled in school, had an incredible sense of humour and was known to deeply love her family.
At the time of her murder, Evaline was just 19 years old. She’d just obtained a job at a local daycare alongside her sister, Dora Cameron, and was studying to get her driver’s license, so she could help her mother run errands.
MURDER:
On October 19, 1995, Evaline’s body was found on the First Nations, not long after she’d gone missing. Dora had been the one to report the disappearance, as it was out of character for her sister to not come home or call a member of the family.
That morning, Dora’s partner began a search for Evaline, while the missing woman’s sister used her breaks at work to drive around and look for her. She also spoke with anyone she thought might have information regarding Evaline’s whereabouts. It was while speaking with these individuals that Dora learned the 19-year-old had last been seen at a house party on the east side.
Dora informed her partner of the information and asked him to search the area near the house. It wasn’t long after that he found Evaline dead, in a wooded area behind the residence.
INVESTIGATION:
Almost immediately, Dora was struck by how unusual Evaline’s disappearance and murder were. It wasn’t like her to hang out with the crowd at the party, nor did she regularly speak with the host, so Dora was at a loss as to how her sister wound up there. The group also made her uneasy.
There’s very little information available regarding the investigation into Evaline’s death. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have shared that the case remains open and that no charges have been laid.
Dora says the last time she communicated with the authorities about the case was when her sister’s body was found. She hasn’t heard anything concrete about what happened to Evaline, and has been left to sift through the rumours that travel through the local community. One offered up the name of a potential suspect, but this individual has since passed away.
