DISCOVERY

On January 14, 2025, a construction worker cleaning the basement of 24009 48th Avenue W in Mountlake Terrace, Snohomish County, Washington, discovered a human skull in a bucket. He was at the residence for a remodelling job, and only the cranium was found.

Various details have been uncovered by web sleuths regarding the former owners of the residence, which had been sold in December of the previous year. However, it should be noted there’s nothing tying these individuals to the skull.

In 2014, Cody McCoy, one of the former owners, was working for the local sheriff’s office when a man named Alex Dold died at his hands and those of another deputy, Bryson McGee. The pair subsequently became involved in a $1.5 million wrongful death lawsuit. McCoy no longer works for the sheriff’s office.

Fast forward to November 15, 2024, when a Quit Claim Deed transferring ownership of 24009 48th Avenue W was filed, stemming from a divorce settlement between McCoy and his ex-wife. Several months later, on March 7, 2025, a Civil Protection Order was filed in Snohomish County involving both parties.

AUTOPSY

Given only the cranium was located, very little could be concluded regarding the decedent. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner determined it belonged to a female, but that was about all they were certain about. No cause of death could be determined, and they were only able to narrow down her date of death to between two and 75 years prior (between 1950 and 2023).

DETAILS

Jane Doe is described as a White, Hispanic or mixed-race female between the ages of 21 and 65. Given only partial remains were recovered, her height and weight couldn’t be determined. Her hair and eye colour are also unknown.

At present, a laboratory is attempting to extract a DNA profile that can be uploaded to CODIS.
